Medical Waste Management Treatment and Steam System Upgrade
BEI Associates, Inc was retained by the Henry Ford Health System (HFHS) to investigate viable options for the disposal of Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) from its' Main Campus in Detroit Michigan. The initial BEI Scope was to determine the feasibility of on-site treatment versus off campus treatment and/or disposal.  The result of the BEI feasibility study was to recommend that on-site treatment was technologically and economically viable, especially considering the volume of RMW generated on an annual basis. BEI was then commissioned to evaluate available technologies and vendors of those technologies for implementation at the Henry Ford Hospital (HFH).

Boiler Experience
The Henry Ford Hospital replaced its medical waste incinerator with a modern steam sterilization system.  BEI was chosen to provide the engineering support to remove the existing incinerator and corresponding heat recovery boiler, and replace them with a start-of-the-art autoclave system.  BEI selected the most cost-effective boiler to replace the incinerator heat recover boiler.  Criteria for this selection included; 1) severely limited access to the new boiler room, 2) optimization of boiler capacity, and 3) total project cost. BEI was successful at up-rating the steaming capacity of the incinerator heat exchanger by replacing it with a larger boiler within the total project budget.

Perinatal Center
BEI provided architectural and engineering services for the development of the existing obstetrics department into a new perinatal center.  BEI worked with the hospital staff and administration for the complete redesign and relocation of the unit into the east wing of the building.  Included are ten new LDRP's, a triage/early labor lounge, clean and soiled utility rooms, nurse's station, delivery and C-Section rooms, a minor operating room, recovery room, and various other ancillary spaces including on-call suites, offices and conference/teaching rooms.  Centralization of support facilities allow efficient functioning of the pleasant and spacious LDRP concept.  The major renovation includes new finishes, cabinets, architectural treatments, and updated utilities, all state-of-the-art design.

New Incinerator
BEI completed a study concerning the possible upgrading or installation of a new incinerator for the hospital.  The study involved identifying potential modifications and/or replacement options to its current 48,000 pound per day incinerator to extend its expected capacity, useful life, operating efficiencies, and environmental controls.
