The Jefferson North building expansion project provides additional floor space for new manufacturing process equipment located in Body, Paint and Final Assembly departments. The Body Shop Building addition consists of approximately 450,000 square feet of new construction, a conveyor and pedestrian connection between the existing and the New Body Shop. The Body Shop addition was constructed south of the existing Body Shop and is a stand-alone structure.
The expansion involved facility additions as well as extensive site work. As part of this project, BEI designed the installation and replacement of over 1,000,000 square feet of pavement, parking lots, roadways, test tracks, and marshalling areas. Before construction commenced, 350,000 cubic yards of earth had to be removed. Total earthwork for the job was approximately 500,000 cubic yards.
The project area increased from approximately 450,000 s.f. to 850,000 s.f. on a fast-track program which required a structural steel mill-order approach. The most impressive aspect of the project was the magnitude of construction and logistics at a busy car-producing site. All areas of the production plant were involved in new construction and renovation. Through the entire process, the plant continued to produce new Jeep Grand Cherokee product at the rate of over 1,200 cars per day without any interruption. With Jeep Grand Cherokee being one of Chrysler's most successful and profitable products, schedule maintenance, site management and continued uninterrupted production were major requirements of this project.
